Reflection

September 2, 2023

Every time I look in the mirror I’m surprised by my own appearance.

Not because I think I look good, but because I look different from everyone else.

From my dark skin, to my curly hair, my eyes, my everything!

And with white parents I surely stand out.

Do I even deserve to be called black if I lack knowledge of it all?

When I’m older

I want to visit Africa once again.

To see what it really means to be black.

That way, when I look in the mirror,

I can be proud of what I see

In my reflection.

This is who I really am.

I am black.

The author's comments:

I am adopted from Ethiopia. I have always been insecure of how different I look compared to the rest of my family members. Not only that, but I also have no knowledge on black culture.
