The Art of Delicacy

Growing up, manners had always been held to a high standard in our home. Napkin on your lap, sit up straight, use please and thank you, and chew with your mouth closed. My older brother is two years older than me. We have sat at a dinner table together for nearly 18 years, and nothing has ever changed. We will be out to a nice family dinner, chew with your mouth closed -- The food comes to the table and two seats away I can hear an aggressive chomp. To my ears, it is like nails on a chalkboard. In my presence, it sends shivers up my spine, and goosebumps down my arms. My stomach jumps and turns even with the slightest, chomp. Some may think it is intentional, but I genuinely believe he doesn’t realize it. It’s as annoying as a dog who won’t stop licking your ankles. Similar to shaving and getting cut, at this point, not surprising. Similar to hearing one car hit another when there's an accident, deadly. He is now 20 years old, at college an hour away. All the shivers and goosebumps, stomachaches and more, left with him last fall, and only occasionally come home to visit.
