The Complexity of Water

I shudder from the taste of eternal bliss —

Water,

The very substance that flooded my dreams last night,

Drowned me,

Murdered me,

Now gives me life

Its duality confuses the air in my lungs

The blood in my circulatory system

The essence of my very soul

A tsunami of emotions traps me,

Inside a web

Of its own design,

As a slumbering beast awakens

How do I worship what decimated my house?

Does that not discount the abode it provides for countless more?

How do I love what stole my grandfather’s ashes?

Even though it was his dying wish

To be buried among the fish

Married to an octopus

And father to a shark

The fluidity of my mind exists in one single word:

Water.

And yet, I still cannot comprehend it.

A spiraling consciousness drags me further down

Into the deep, unknown

Soon “eternal bliss” resembles “eternal condemnation”

Water,

In its purest form,

Has impurities like no other

Water,

A malicious saint,

A poisoned sweet,

Loving hatred,

Peaceful yet pugnacious,

An oxymoron in itself

I will never fathom its purpose, dimensions

And so, despite my tears

I will die in a watery grave

Water.

I am a student at the Spence school and this poem was inspired by my intense love for the ocean.
