The Flag in the Wind
My flag flies high
It doesn’t leave the mast until the wind pulls it off and it decides to go
It is now a kite with wind taking it through the sky
It falls
The wind does not pick it up
The disability to fly cannot keep it down
It begins to resemble me
I can’t play soccer, basketball, baseball or any sports
But I will not let that stop me
My kite picks itself up like I do
My voice lifts me up
With its rhythm and leadership
Then the wind takes the kite once more
Like as I head down the path of life
I will not let life pull me down
My kite cuts down in the trees but soars up
It gets bruised but stays in the air
I will be hurt but I get up again
It will not let gravity pull it down
I will not let life pull me down
My kite keeps in the wind until it has reached the horizon
The wind drops it and it picks up
I will not let life pull me down.

Truism: A kite flies against the wind, not with it – Winston S Churchill

The author's comments:

This was written in 5th grade, transitioning to a new school, from private to public, a different setting and very different experience. Depicts the difficulties faced but staying strong in face of adversity and resilience and courage to not just stand back up but 'fly' by using what I was good at and not just feeling dejected because of what all I was not good at.
