Your  body  is  a  gift  you  were  born  with,  

                           And  there’s  nothing  quite  like  it.  

                      There  is  so  much  going  on  within  you,  

                          So,  let’s  take  a  look  inside  our  body.  

                      First,  there  is  the  heart,  who  is  beating  tirelessly,  

                          Working  day  and  night  timelessly.  

                     It  pumps  and  supplies  your  body  parts  with  blood,  

                          Blood  contains  hemoglobin,  which  is  why  it  looks  red!  

                     It  palpitates  in  excitement  when  you  are  nervous,  

                          But  you  can  hardly  feel  it  beat,  on  a  regular  basis.  

                     It  pumps  out  blood,  which  is  always  on  a  cycle,  

                         It  is  needed  for  every  organism’s  survival.  

                     It  contains  platelets,  without  which  you  will  bleed  out,  

                         Phagocytes,  which  put  any  foreign  body  to  rout,  

                     And  red  blood  cells  which  are  basically  post  men,  

                         Who  run  around  in  your  arteries  and  veins.  

                    The  nose  is  very  important  as  it  enables  you  to  breathe,  

                        It  has  a  hollow  space  called  the  nasal  cavity  beneath,  

                   The  mucus  and  the  cilia  trap  the  germs,  purifying  the  entering  air.  

                 The  air  passes  through  the  pharynx  the  esophagus  and  the  trachea  share,  

                     And  down  the  windpipe  it  goes.  

       Oxygen  is  taken  by  the  blood  while  carbon  dioxide  exits  back  through  the  nose.  

                   The  blood  is  purified  by  the  lungs,  

                Between  which  the  heart  lies  and  drums.  

                   The  lungs  are  a  network  of  air  sacs,  

               And  facilitates  gaseous  exchange.  

                   Under  it  is  the  diaphragm,  a  muscular  sheet,  

              Without  which  the  thoracic  column  would  be  incomplete.  

                   The  control  centre  of  our  body  is  the  brain,  

              And  without  it,  all  the  other  organs  would  go  in  vain.  

                   The  heart  wouldn’t  beat,  and  the  lung  wouldn’t  purify,  

              If  there  was  no  brain  and  neurocytes.  

                   Down  it,  runs  the  spinal  cord,  

             Which  transmits  info  that  can’t  be  ignored.  

                    It's  got  the  cerebrum,  the  seat  of  will  power,  

        And  the  cerebellum,  controlling  your  balance  so  you  don’t  topple  over.  

               And  then  the  brain  stem,  who  controls  your  involuntary  actions  

        And  the  supplementary  neurons  which  carry  information  transactions.  

                The  nerve’s  got  a  cell  body,  you  call  it  the  cyton,  

        And  a  long,  long  tail,  carrying  impulses,  called  the  axon.  

              The  window  to  the  world  outside  is  the  human  eye,  

                 The  lacrimal  glands  above  it  secrete  tears  when  you  cry.  

The  outer  sclera  houses  the  conjunctiva  and  cornea,  which  allow  light  rays  to  enter. 

              The  amount  of  light  entering  is  controlled  by  the  pupil  in  the  center.  

                 The  coloured  choroid  prevents  scattering  of  light,  

               The  image  falls  on  the  retina  and  there  happens  the  perception  of  sight.  

                 Now,  let’s  talk  about  the  amazing  working  of  the  ear,  

               It  helps  you  maintain  body  balance  and  listen  and  hear.  

                 The  auditory  canal  carries  soundwaves  to  the  tympanum,  

             Which  then  resonates  the  sound  to  the  ear  ossicles  and  as  an  outcome,  

    The  Organ  of  corti  in  the  cochlea  receives  the  vibrations  and  sends  out  impulses. 
   

            The  semicircular  canals,  utriculus  and  sacculus  control  your  body  balances.  

            Your  skin  is  called  the  jack  of  all  trades,  

               The  melanin  in  it  imparts  different  skin  shades.  

            It  is  a  mechanical  barrier  preventing  entry  of  germs,  

               It  contains  two  layers  of  epidermis  and  dermis,  

            It  has  cells  concerned  with  touch  and  pain,  

              The  sensitivity  of  the  skin  enables  Braille  learning  in  the  blind.  

            Your  bones  are  what  protect  the  vital  body  parts  of  you,  

              They  coordinate  with  your  muscles  to  help  you  move.  

           To  your  vital  organs  like  the  brain,  the  bones  offer  protection,  

              And  the  marrow  within  them  is  concerned  with  blood  cell  production.  

           A  bone  is  connected  to  a  muscle  with  a  tendon,  

              A  bone  and  another,  the  ligaments  hold  on.  

           And  then,  there  is  the  digestive  system,  

              Which  starts  with  the  mouth  and  ends  with  the  rectum,  

           It  breaks  down  the  food  you  eat,  

              With  the  many  enzymes  the  intestines  and  stomach  secrete,  

           And  then  the  body  gets  rid  of  the  undigested  foods  

              And  that  is  how  the  process  concludes.  

          And  then  the  metabolic  wastes  is  broken  down  to  urea  in  the  liver,  

              She  also  breaks  down  the  bad  fat,  nicotine  and  the  liquor,  

           The  kidney  and  its  nephrons  then  start  ultrafiltration,  

               And  continue  with  urine  production.  

           The  urine  is  carried  through  the  ureters,  

              And  expelled  through  the  urethra,  the  ending  of  the  bladder.  

           The  nervous  system  and  the  endocrine  system  go  hand  in  hand,  

              The  complex  system  houses  every  ductless  gland.  

          These  glands  pour  their  secretions  directly  in  your  bloodstream,  

Now,  you  know  how  the  nervous  system  and  the  endocrine  system  work  as  a  team. 
          

           Starting  with  the  pituitary  hanging  from  the  hypothalamic  stalk,  

      The  glands  secrete  chemical  messenger  hormones  which  help  the  organs  talk.  

          Capping  your  kidneys  are  the  adrenal  glands,  secreting  adrenaline,  

      This  is  the  emergency  hormone,  giving  you  an  internal  rush  just  in  time.  

          And  then  the  pancreas,  located  above  your  bowels,  

       Secretes  insulin  and  helps  maintain  your  blood  sugar  levels.  

          The  thyroid  glands  release  thyroxine,  but  the  overall  arbitrary  

        Lies  in  the  master  gland,  the  pituitary.  

       The  hormones  play  an  important  role  in  sexual  maturity,  

          When  your  reproductive  organs  mature,  you  attain  biological  puberty.  

  The  influence  of  the  Follicle  stimulating  and  Luteinizing  hormone  of  the  pituitary 

          Helps  in  hormone  secretion  of  the  male  testicle  and  female  ovary.  

       The  testicles  produce  sperms  with  the  help  of  hormone  testosterone  

And  the  ovaries  produce  eggs  with  the  help  of  hormones  estrogen  and  progesterone.  

       Boys,  going  through  puberty,  experience  growth  spurts,  

        Their  shoulders  outgrow  almost  every  one  of  their  shirts.  

     Their  Adam’s  apples  enlarge,  and  the  pitch  of  their  voice  turns  grave,  

        They  may  have  excessive  facial  hair  growth  which  they  would  have  to  shave. 

      Adolescent  boys  may  find  it  hard  to  accept  their  bodies  the  way  it  is,  

        But  sooner  or  later,  each  and  every  boy  will  learn  to  love  this  body  of  his.  

            When  a  girl  child’s  ovaries  are  fully  matured,  

        One  of  them  releases  an  egg,  which  waits  for  its  turn  to  get  fertilized.  

           The  walls  of  the  uterus,  the  endometrium,  then  start  growing,  

        However,  when  the  egg  is  left  unfertilized,  the  endometrium  begins  peeling.  

            Out  the  vagina  goes  the  tissue,  in  the  form  of  discharge  and  blood.  

The  menstrual  cycle  continues  every  month.  The  endometrial  cells  grow  and  shed.  

           Now,  let’s  talk  about  the  process  which  brought  us  into  existence,  

        The  fascinating  biology  of  human  reproduction.  

           It  starts  with  production  of  the  sex  cells,  you  call  them  gamete  

        When  a  male’s  sperm  and  a  female’s  egg  meet  and  greet,  

           They  fuse  in  the  oviduct.  This  is  what  we  call  fertilization.  

Once  a  zygote  is  made,  it  attaches  to  its  mommy’s  womb.  We  call  this  implantation.  

           The  woman  is  said  to  be  pregnant  once  implantation  is  done,  

Based  on  the  sex  chromosomes  on  the gametes,it  can  either  be  a  daughter  or  a  son. 

           The  male  can  produce  sperms  with  either  an  X  or  a  Y  chromosome,  

       While  the  female  can  only  produce  eggs  with  an  X  chromosome.  

           When  X  and  Y  meet,  the  parents  welcome  a  prince,  their  lovely  baby  boy.  

       If  X  and  X  meet,  the  parents  welcome  a  princess,  their  pride  and  joy.  

           The  zygote,  with  the  help  of  stem  cells,  undergoes  multiple  cell  divisions  

       It  goes  from  a  few-celled  zygote  to  an  embryo  and  then  to  a  fetus.  

           The  placenta  is  a  beautiful  structure,  attaching  the  baby  to  the  uterus.  

      It  facilitates  exchange  of  nutrients  and  waste  and  the  growth  of  the  umbilicus. 
   

       During  pregnancy,  the  mother’s  uterus  expands  thousand  times  its  original  size,  

           To  provide  room  for  the  blooming  bud  inside.  

       The  baby  is  surrounded  by  the  amniotic  sac,  

           Which  protects  the  baby  from  any  mechanical  shock.  

       The  period  of  development  of  a  baby  in  its  mother’s  uterus  is  gestation.  

     And  the  baby  is  expelled  out  of  the  body  through  the  vagina  during  parturition. 

         Prior  to  childbirth,  the  momma  experiences  a  rush  of  oxytocin,  

     She  undergoes  painful  contractions,  and  her  water  is  broken.  

        That’s  how  you  and  I  were  born,  

      After  spending  9  months  long,  

        rolling  about  inside  our  mommy’s’  wombs.  

     That’s  how  the  miracle  of  life  starts  and  blooms.  

        So,  now  you  know,  the  biology  behind  maternal  love,  

She  let  us  live  rent-free  inside  her  body;  Mothers  are  equivalent  to  the  God  above.  

       To  keep  this  amazing  body  healthy,  you  got  to  exercise  regularly,  

     Stay  away  from  junk  foods,  and  from  bad  carbs,  particularly.  

        Say  goodbye  to  your  problems,  and  no  to  your  stress,  

     Sleep  like  a  baby,  your  mind  free  from  any  distress.  

       There’s  nothing  wonderful  like  the  human’s  anatomy  and  physiology,  

    Believe  me  when  I  say  your  body  is  much  better  than  today’s  technology.  

       So,  try  and  keep  your  body  fit  and  healthy,  

    Cuz,  it’s  a  gift  you  were  born  with,  whether  or  not  you  are  wealthy.  

       Truly,  the  human  body  is  a  fascinating  creation,  

    So  give  your  body  some  well-deserved  appreciation!!!
