You stay in the depths

of your muted sea of emotions

The window casts you far apart from all that occurs on the outside

You’re stuck wallowing in your anguish alone

But wouldn’t it help to open your curtains?

Show the world who you really are, this world

Can take your hand, fill you with bliss and energy

Open your window, reach out to the stars

And all the blinks of light that you’ve blacked out,

Among the deep sky of the unknown

Every light is another glimmer of hope

And the minute you let them into your life

The dark, murky tones of the sky

Will fade to a beautiful sunrise

The room will lighten gloriously

Bringing hope and success for a new day

And in the most dismal of times

The stars will glow twice as bright

Giving happiness when you feel all good is gone

The author's comments:

This piece is inspired by my own struggle with mental health and not being afraid to ask for help. I have struggled with mental health all my life, and I often feel weak when I need to ask for help. In this poem, the narrator convinces another person to “open their window and reach out to the stars,” that is, displaying strength by asking for help despite being nervous.
