As I entered this isolated world

I travel back in time,

greeted with the simplicity and peace Mother had to offer.

Yet so hard as I try to escape,

I catch myself eyeing the fragments man left behind -

blobs of red over the cool blue sky.

Not all is lost as the voice of Nature prevails.

I peer up to catch a friend, alone, spying through its web,

glistening silver in the morning sun.

The everlasting winds shook its home,

thinking to myself it was off to sail ways.

Yet the serenity of its pace never ceased,

as it travelled across the web.

A portal to a different universe -

unaffected by mine.

Whispering in silence – lessons to be learned.

The author's comments:

My poem was created during a class activity where we went to a mangrove island near our school. We were asked to take inspiration from the poetic works of Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman.  This poem is meant to represent the tranquility of Nature and how in modern history it has been disturbed by the rapid industrialization of mankind. Remnants of man-made objects litter a plethora of our earth’s natural wonders, making it increasingly more difficult to have a pure and authentic understanding and appreciation of nature. As I am immersed in nature on an October morning, I spot a spider in a tree, just above my head. The ambience is filled with turbulence as the leaves flutter and the web itself moves, but the calmness of the spider’s movements captivated me, as did its gracious defiance of the inclement weather. In a way, humanity faces similar challenges on a daily basis. But to cope with challenges, we often alter nature artificially, unlike the spider, whose calmness is admirable. We may learn a lot from the spider, from its tranquility and adaptability, as well as from its accumulated wisdom and perseverance. Throughout history and in many fields of study, nature has been copied for its ingenious design, and millions of years of testing.  In observing nature, we may find the answers to humanity’s greatest challenges. The spider was ‘whispering in silence - lessons to be learned’.
