Ripped at the Seams

January 16, 2024

I bought a shirt online.

That’s all it was,

I thought.

When it arrived,

I took it out of the package

and examined it.

Every stitch,

every color,

every thread,

sewn by little hands.

I can see the tears staining the fabric,

the sweat on the sleeve.

The blisters on the fingers

just to earn a penny.

Seeing the tears fall

at the back of my mind

onto the tiny faces straining smiles…

…is enough to make me never want to purchase anything

ever again.

This is a poem about child labor in the fashion industry that I wrote to accompany a project about fashion I completed for my English class.
