Not the Best of Friends
I know we’re best friends:
We smile the brightest when we see each other;
We laugh the hardest when we’re together;
We share the funniest memories together.
We’re best friends!
What are best friends?
Do best friends talk outside of school everyday?
Do best friends act perceptive?
Do best friends feel in competition with each other?
We’re best friends.
Am I a good best friend?
I can’t respond fast to your texts;
I can’t speak for hours outside of school;
I can’t hangout freely during break.
What are we?
Are you a good best friend?
I watch you tell others about my business;
I watch you call me fake in front of others;
I watch you boast that you’re so nice.
What are we?
Are we best friends?
I would never cry if you got a 100;
I would never let you do all the work for me;
I would never throw trash at you if you got a 100.
What are we?
I don’t know if we’re best friends:
I never received an apology;
I never received any effort;
I never received any reassurance.
What are we?
I know we were best friends:
We made our days better;
We had a special bond together;
We were each other’s “person”.
We were best friends.
What about now?
I can’t give up what we had;
I can’t stop caring about you;
I can’t stop wanting to be your best friend again.
We’re friends.
Not the best,
Not the worst.
I’m hurt by you,
But I can’t leave you
So we’re just friends.
