"If the highest aim of a captain were to preserve his ship, he would keep it in port forever." - Thomas Aquinas

Just another checkbox
Marked again in their finite lists
In permanent ink.

Paper that screens the eyes
Tempers hatred to a fine blade.
To be screened to the Ins as fun,
Never tempered by the pain of the Outs.

Lists are solitary.
Ink is final.
We’re just another checkbox
To be checked off.
Out. Out. In. Out. In.

Those thrown out by Listmakers
Buy their own pens;
Find their own paper;
Draw their own boxes;
Make their own lists
To throw their own blades.

Now We are the Listmakers.
We chastise the Outs.
We couldn’t be with the Outs.
We prescribe these blades.
We proscribe the bleeding.

But We Are.
We all Are
And so am I.

The author's comments:

The concept of "ins" and "outs" refer to ingroups and outgroups and more generally, cliques that are formed from the start of your schooling career. Why exactly do cliques of people form, anyways? By butting into already-established cliques (though mostly with little success) I found that most people really aren't bad or terrible or some outcast or too stuck-up or too stupid or too abused at home. Everyone unconsciously makes these enemies the moment they buy in to the formation of these cliques in the first place. People almost always aren't bad or evil. We're all people.
