Man's Will
In the mountains
Man finds his greater self
Outside of modernism
Excitement plots within him
With each footstep
Rises a will to conquer
All the hills that plague his path
He desires to squander
It's in his spirit burning -
As he ascends the mountain
The will to live and achieve
It won’t let go -
As deep down lies belief
Reflecting in the lakes
He sees himself unfold
And it cannot be escaped
Life is a lemon, the juice is his joy
He squeezes hard as man can muster
And finds himself exhausted
Overwhelmed by stacking thoughts
That pile up —like books on shelves
How long has it been?
A year? Or twelve?
Man tunes out and loses touch
The loop just never stops
Yet in the trees with winter’s breeze
Under summer skies and autumn leaves
He bends his knees and looks above
Glad for all he’s suffered
Yet two feet deep in his hike from the cities
He finds what has long been missing
Like a flame from the sparked wood
Life returns suddenly
His old vision burns —
And the answer is clear
Just breathe and flow
And life will show how simple things can be

Hi, I am a 16 year-old student, athlete, and outdoor enthusiast. I wrote this piece to express the feelings of power and self-discovery I feel when I am in nature. Specifically, when I am hiking, I experience these higher-consciousness thoughts that I included in my free-verse. This poem was a way for me to use poetry as a vessel for my introspection while amongst the greater outdoors.
