The soldier, who fought tooth and nail to defeat the enemy, was going back home with the sound of guns and shells ringing in his ears like tinnitus, looking forward to a loving wife and children who would welcome him warmly, and comfortable home, opened the door; all that awaited him was the cold air of the house that had long since cooled down, and a man whistling as he lay with his muddy military boots on the comfortable sofa where he had always told stories to his children.


The author's comments:

Every time I read a children's book about winning the war and returning home with a 'happily-ever-after' ending, I'd always thought of people who lost. If there is a victory, there must be defeat. I wanted to suggest the coexistence of these two contradictions at the same time.
