Black Concrete Road
Once, a beautiful forest stood here
Trees grasping at the sky with confidence,
Vines prodding at the ground and snaking upwards,
Bushes sprawling out lazily like a cat lying in the sun
They were entertained by the joyful melodies
Of the finches,
Of the robins,
Of the sparrows,
Creating an orchestra of sound that tastes like honey
You cannot help but delight at the birds’ delight.
But one day the melodies were drowned out
By the busy grinding of machinery
One day the trees broke their legs,
And were no longer able to touch the heavens
When I stare down the desolate road
With black concrete staining the horizon,
I find it hard to imagine
Something this beautiful once was here
But people do not imagine this forest.
Always in a rush, people are content
That they do not have to spend the extra effort
To take a harder path
People love this black concrete road.
