Finished Waiting for a Fairy Tale
I’m stuck.
Stuck in a body that does not fit.
Stuck in a mind that nobody gets.
Stuck in a time that has already passed.
Stuck in love refusing to last.
I claw at the earth,
It digs in my skin,
Before I was born
My fate was foretold
Trapped in a tower,
Not a real boy,
Unable to fly,
No prince waiting
for me,
So on my own, I pick up the pieces
And tread my own path.
On my way to grandma’s house,
With a sword and a shield,
To slay my own demons
And find my own treasure,
My own
Happily
Ever
After

I wrote this poem as an outlet for my trauma and my struggles. As a non-binary, autistic, foster kid, I've held onto hopes that have only hurt me in the end. I've waited for others to save me, when I should be the one working to save myself, because I'm just as competent as others. Just because I am different, doesn't mean I am lesser, and that is what my poem is about. My experiences, no matter how difficult, do not have to define me. I can be whoever I want to be.
