Who am I?
Stumbling barefoot on the hard ground,
Sweat shining on my forehead,
Blinking quickly in the hot sun,
I carry pales of water for my family
Conditions are poor,
Food is scarce,
Water is dirty,
The word ‘healthy’ is unheard of
The routine is the same thing,
Take care of mama, my brother and sister,
Fetch a water pail,
And sometimes make mischief
Though I may be dark-skinned,
Living in poverty,
And greatly desperate,
I am my country’s future
Where, right now,
The future isn’t so bright,
Who am I?
