Ode To Jean Toomer
A certain man wishes for impossibility
…and those are rays laid upon our skin
rays of shrapnel
to burn, peel away white or black
or red
until all that is seen is bone
and we relapse
into the same human
skeleton
again
as we are and have been
even through the heavy burden of our skin
the coats passed down from our fathers
….A certain man talks
like a saint
and wishes like a fool
skin as white as coal
and skin as black as snow
forgets sin
on scars made red
with lipstick
forgets the scar
of black flesh after flame.
