Good Enough
Maybe we’re a little bit careless
and maybe just a little too loud
maybe life’s a little too unfair
and maybe even two is a crowd.
Maybe we’re a little too busy
and maybe just a little bit lost
but we’ll find out way somehow
our sanity the only cost.
Maybe we could all use some luck
a little extra, for no reason
just to keep our spirits up
and assure us the air’s worth breathing.
Maybe we’re not the kind to give up
or maybe we are
but remember that just because we’re hurt
doesn’t mean we get a scar.
But most of all
maybe we’re all just a little scared
of things we can’t explain
because to set forth and explore them
would undoubtedly cause us pain.
But maybe if we do great things
they won’t think we’re scared.
Maybe they’ll think we’re brave
and strong
and real.
If only we were.
If only we were winners.
Then we wouldn’t be scared.
We all just want to be good enough.
We want to soar above obstacles
and rise over challenges
we want to fly like eagles
but run like gazelles.
We want to be the best
only the best will do.
We want to be the hare, not the tortoise,
and of course we won’t take a break.
We want to look down on all of the ones not as good as us
let them feast their eyes on us as we rise above them
meant to be seen and heard and remembered.
We all just want to be good enough.
Good enough for teachers and parents and each other.
Good enough that we are masters at our trade
and can endure the very worst.
We all just want to be good enough for the world.
But once we’re finally there
once we’ve slaved and worked and wearied
tried and tried and tried again
once we’re finally up on that pedestal
they break us apart
Tear us apart
rip us apart.
And how dare we ever try to get back up?
They have us carry the heaviest burdens
up the highest hills
until our feet are cracking
festering with blisters
backs are breaking
and then we are right back where we started.
Not on a pedestal.
Not above the rest.
Not winners.
Not brave or strong or real.
Just ourselves.
