The Things They Carried
No one knows
What the truth beholds
All they know
Was how the truth was told
In the world of Nam
The truth was lost
And in this journey
Was a deadly cost
Breathing and suffering
The dead and the dying
What they had to pay
Because the truth was lying
Lives were lost
Souls were taken
Time stood still
Their hearts forsaken
No time to dream
Or time to stare
No time to wish
They hadn’t been there
What they saw was brutal
And scary at best
They had survived
But none of the rest
The war was over
And the deed was done
But no smiles in the field
Under the blazing sun
Their friends are gone
And there is nothing to say
Their lives as they knew it
Ended that day
There’s now time to dream
But dreams that haunt
Reminding them forever
The Devil’s unforgiving taunt
Lives that were lost
Dreams that were shattered
Wishing and bleeding
Thoughts have been scattered
Truth never told
Hearts have been broken
Nothing can fix
Words that had been spoken
Today what they carry
Are the tragedies of war
Never to forget
But remember forever more
