Black pigment exploding on canvas
Irritated sails, snagged and stained
Dragging the ship along leaving an ink trail behind
Mocking every patched mistake and dented floorboard
Every rusted rod and over-used wheel
Vanished sailors engraved in the wood
Nobody wants them
The ship
The crew
The scene
Except in a frame
An artist's easy living

The author's comments:
I derived my inspiration for this poem from a painting of a boat in my hallway, and I always thought how terrible it would be if I actually was on that ripped up boat. However, it is one of my favorite paintings and is absolutely gorgeous.
