The Actuality Within The Cliche
Broken hearted is such a cliché
You see streets lined with crumpled sheets of notebook paper
Snippets of “…still be friends” and “I’m sorry, but…” reveal their nature
A teary eyed girl surrounded by futile uplifting words and reassuring hugs
Broken hearted
But can broken hearted still be what it is
Or has the cliché crumbled to the point where the actuality of it
No longer exists?
Can your heart truly be shattered by someone you’ve known for mere weeks?
Or does it require knowing someone for years
Possibly your whole life
To have their rejection crumble you to, well, the point of breaking?
Someone to have said to loved you no matter what,
Even seeing you at your worst, your ugliest
Say that they break up with you
Over a text
And leave no reason behind it?
Or when years ago you received your first kiss from them
Whom your father wanted to strangle
During the late autumn when you were four
To suddenly have them drop you when you’re fourteen?
Broken hearted
But is that all it is?
Tears shed for days and then easily forgotten?
Or is it when you see them without you
With someone else
That your stomach begins to churn and tears brim your eyes
And your have to leave for fear of breaking down in front of all these people
When you hear about them in the paper, or on the news, or at school
That you simply cannot bear it?
Or, gasp, attempting to get them back and yet again facing ugly words?
Broken hearted
Is not simply your feelings being shattered
Nor is it only tears and heartache
It is the one you’ve truly loved
The one you’ve spent all your time with
Endless photos, endless laughs, timeless moments
Being ripped ruthlessly from your heart
Causing a hole that begins to bleed out all of those times
That cracks and falls to pieces until
All that is left is a bloody puddle of memories
And even rebuilt by another by Krazy Glue and staples
Steal leaves cracks where missed things leak out
That is broken hearted
