Battle of the Somme
Shells exploding everywhere
the ground exploding, shaking
shrapnel and dirt flew
we sat on the left
as I looked to the men across from me
they knew my fate as well did I
we clutched our bayontes and prayed
our hearts stopping as each shell exploded
the men to my right and left sweating
we were the ones to go over the trench
we knew we only had a short time
to cross no mans land before
before the enemy got to the machine guns
then there would be no hope
orders were shouted and we flew over the top
men stretching far to my right and left charged
we kept running no matter what
the further I got the less amount stood
soon i felt alone and by myself
a sharp pain engulfed my leg as I fell
I saw black as I lay on the ground
but I was one of a few
I lived to tell the story of my experience
of the Battle of the Somme
