“Colorado Stars”
Under the frigid inferno of Colorado stars
?We retired, cloaked in blankets
?And the aura of the twinkling night sky

??His face hung before from mine, ?
And the tenderness of his soft brown eyes?
Rekindled the warmth in my soul,
?And lit my heart on fire

??And under the frigid inferno of Colorado stars?
We retired, cloaked in blankets?
And the aura of the twinkling night sky

??His eye twinkled as I drew closer,?
Drawing the blanket to our chins
?The stars seemed to fade away
?As he wrapped me tightly in his arms

??And under the frigid inferno of Colorado stars
?We retired, cloaked in blankets?
And the aura of the twinkling night sky??

Laugher rose from the bellies of late-night patrons
?In the village, and merry ha-ha’s danced?
On wisps of crystal-clear mountain air
?Like steam leaping from the chimney
?Of the Sugar Shack nested in the valley below

??And under the frigid inferno of Colorado stars
?We retired, cloaked in blankets
?And the aura of the twinkling night sky??

Just as the stars had faded from memory
?So too, did the sound,
?The outside world disappeared
?As he became mine.

??So under the frigid inferno of Colorado stars?
We retired, cloaked in blankets
?And the aura of the twinkling night sky?.

This piece was inspired by vivid memories of a night spent sleeping on a hotel roof-top in the mountains of Colorado.
