Indelible Incarceration
These silvery bars rise up around me,
like brittle bones of bruiséd bait.
They’re tougher than they seem,
saying my freedom can wait.
Oh, you cannot see them.
But know they are there,
because I can feel them,
as I sit here and stare;
perpetually pondering a life
that knows not of imprisonment,
of torture, disparity,
or even dishevelment.
This perfect world,
of which I dream day and night,
will never be real;
simple insurance for fright.
I’m scared of tomorrow.
He**, I’m scared of today.
But most of all I’m scared
life will always be this way.
