Ode to Death
We sit around waiting for death
and try to convince ourselves
that there’s a world of happiness waiting for us somewhere else.
Who really wants to live forever, anyhow?
I walked past a man shucking oysters on a small island:
“Well, it’s gotta end sometime!” He said with a beguiling smile.
We can tell ourselves we’re living.
I love the way people
lie to themselves even more
than they lie to each other.
Welcome to Earth!!
It’s really a wonderful place, you should visit sometime:
to watch the ignorant, lonely
creatures slowly destroy it.
Me, I will welcome the reaper with open arms,
old friend, how I’ve missed you!
grasp his scythe in my own palm
and whisper how long I’ve waited.
It’s a funny concept—
everlasting life—
appealing to some who don’t ever want to know
what its truly like to die.
These people live:
not with cowardice, but with a stubborn will.
They can put up a fight until
everyone else is gone and
they beg Death to take them back.
