The Golden Mere
He was staring when we first met
staring back at himself in a mere
it was time I be more daring
I step out from behind a tree
he turns his head toward me
quickly
I duck behind the tree
I gingerly make my way back out
he is gone
I walk up to where he last sat
and look down into the clear water
the most perfect face stares back at me
I take a step closer
it’s not my face
I feel something like butter milk beneath my feet
I take a step back
a small narcissus flower lay on the ground
flat and
broken.
