You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. -Ghandi

Bang, bang.
My feet carry me out of my warm, comfortable bed.
Bang, bang.
Glide down the quiet hall onto the deserted street.
Bang, bang.
Past the gate of a seemingly abandoned house.
Bang, bang.

“Help, help”
Into a filthy kitchen, through a hidden doorway.
“Help, help”
Down the wet and musty flight of stairs.
“Help, help”
The source of the voices discovered.
“Help, help”

“Save us, save us”
Pleading eyes sob uncontrollably
“Save us, save us”
I break the ties binding them in place.
“Save us, save us”
Up the stairs, out the door, past the gate.
“Save us, save us”

“Come back, come back”
A dark figure emerges behind us
“Come back, come back”
Legs move at an inhuman rate
“Come back, come back”
But it is too late”
“Come back, come back”

“Please, please”
Dragged back to the house
“Please, please”
Down the stairs to the unforgiving basement
“Please, please”
Bodies tied together and left in the dark.
“Please, please”

Bang, bang.
Hands pound the concrete until they ache.
Bang, bang.
Hoping someone will sense the wildly churning waves of desperation.
Bang, bang.
And come to join as the next inevitable victim.
Bang, bang.

Bang, bang.
Bang, bang.
