At first the weapons are words
Insult after insult
Tears begin to fall
I gate you get thrown around

Then the weapons are fist and it’s a one sided war
My father is on the offensive
My mother is defensive. No time to fight back

I’m stuck in the living room and want dearly to get to the refuge of my room.
It’s a no mans land between the kitchen and my room
I’m afraid I’ll get sucked into this fight

So I don’t run that way
I run outside, into the fresh air
I look upwards to the night sky and I run

I run as quickly and as far away as my feet can take me
Every step feels like chains are being broken away from my body
No longer am I a POW in this war
I have escaped
I am free
