The Highest Shelf
She is the doll on the highest shelf of the toy store
The beautiful one,
that nobody can reach.
She looks at children, through the plastic that engulfs her,
and blurs her beauty.
The children look at her in awe
and try to get her down
Oh the perilous things they will do to hold her
And yesterday’s unicorn that received the same attention no longer lets off a glimmering light.
The children have left it for her.
Each step they take up the wooden shelves, seems to push her farther and farther away
And the plastic becomes opaque
She is no rag doll
That sits, dangles and collapses into a disheveled mess of red yarn
But a delicate poised figure
The doll on the highest shelf of the toy store, is surprisingly unadorned
No opulent accessories or silk fabrics
She wears a white dress and holds a candle that lights up her face
Even though the plastic has lost its transparency,
the light still makes its way through
for the children to follow
And while they wait for the her to be placed on a lower shelf,
They play with other dolls,
Until she is forgotten
As she hoped would happen.
