Safe Here
The snow drifts
lazily across
my vision
as Lacey and I
press our faces into
the cold glass--
making fog
with our warm excited breath.
Now they are here
bounding towards
our house
and the creaking rust-red door that
squeals open as we
rush down the
slippery drive
and crash into
each other’s familiar arms.
We run, breathing hard,
up the stairs to
our castle
protected from the storm outside—
safe--
giggling the dark, pressing
night
into oblivion
