Material Girl
I stare off at the sky
with a faint smile on my lips,
and people assume
my thoughts are too shallow
to hold a drop of water.
With my curling blonde hair
and fluttering summer dress,
people assume
I’m just a pretty picture.
I own a teacup poodle
with bows and ribbons in her hair.
When I walk her down the street,
people assume
I am a material girl.
Oh, if only they knew
my ambitions,
my talents,
or my creativity.
I care not for petty drama
or their trivial concerns.
I thrive on new ideas.
I challenge their opinions.
I adore the pursuit of knowledge.
Maybe I am
oblivious to the obvious,
but sometimes
I know more about people
than they know about themselves.
