Shattered
It's him again, walking towards me.
The hustle and bustle of the lunchroom fades around me as I watch, hoping, wishing.
Eye contact. My heart freezes.
My cheeks feel hot and I can barely breathe.
He smiles. I feel like I could die. I smile back and wave, trying in vain to act casual.
He walks right past me, with a quick hello, and moves on.
My heart is completely shattered, though still beating rapidly.
I whirl around to see him once more and he's talking to someone else.
It's her. My face goes pale and I almost burst out into tears.
She's perfect. She's wearing a dress and high heels, and she looks fantastic.
I'm no competition to her.
I never even had a chance.
It was shattered long ago.
