The Ticking of my Watch

The ticking of my watch
Lengthens the silence between us
Slows
Them
Down
So that there is nothing
Nothing save the ticking
The ticking of my watch
At once so irritating
Now a comfort
So steady
Like the beat of your heart
But I can’t hear that
You won’t let me near
So I press the watch to my ear
And listen to the ticking
The ticking of my watch
Until there is nothing else
Nothing else to think about
But the ticking of my watch
That eclipses the world.
