"Every artist was first an amateur." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

When you hear someone walk on the first floor of your home
When you’re upstairs alone in your room
That’s how you know you’re not alone.

When the lights turn on and off and the fuse box isn’t blown
(And your hand is far away from any light switch)
That’s how you know you’re not alone.

When you hear a voice that isn’t your own
When the rest of your house is asleep
That’s how you know you’re not alone.

When the autumn leaves blow
And a face forms in between them
That’s how you know you’re not alone.

When you hear your name called from the end of the hall
In a voice so deep it rattles your bones
When a figure appears in the steam on your mirror
When things move on their own
And words appear where they have not been written
That’s how you know you’re not alone.

I like ghost stories, even in poem form.
