Stay This Way
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could stay this way?
If I was the girl who sought madcap adventures
And you were always stealing my shoes?
If thunder meant untouched umbrellas and
Dancing in the rain,
If I ate too many Swedish fish and you laughed until you cried?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could take a break from growing up and just be?
If Halloween was always trick or treating and never answering the door?
If dandelion seeds were meant for more than weeds?
Wouldn’t it be great if inside jokes were never forgotten and knock-knock jokes stayed funny and laughter always flowed free?
If board games were war and I couldn’t be beat?
If hugs were an everyday necessity?
Wouldn’t it be lovely if we never stopped jumping in the leaves
If we remembered always to chase the wind,
And if life was still about to begin?
Wouldn’t it be nice if we never gave up on fairies and read each book as though it was our last?
And if we always left a legacy of muddy footprints in our wake?
Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could stay this way?
If a high-five meant friends for life,
And missing markers were tragedies?
If a giggle could sooth a heartbreak,
If adults were superheroes?
If I stayed me and you stayed you and we were
(for the moment)
Young.
