Caged Bird

It disappears from the air, gone, out of sight.
It cries out for help in the horrible, dark night.

But its despair is silenced by the predator above
The one who causes pain, the one who does not love.

Gone the light of life, stolen without care.
Gone the innocence he did not spare.

It sits quietly in the newly-formed cage.
The book of its life writes a new page

of a type of longing only it could know.
A type that suddenly begins to grow.

It shakes with hatred and anger at its' fate.
It shakes until finally its' anger abates.

It sings a song so lovely to start
that it breaks through the chains encasing its heart.

It sings so loud and sings so strong
It breaks the curse that made everything wrong.

I finally know why the caged bird sings,
It sings to be free and spread its wings.

It sings to forget the pain that was there
the pain that made the cage appear.

It sings to break through the darkest of days
to forget and to live through this unpleasant maze.

The newly-found wings quiver to start
but they prove strong and true like the uncaged birds heart.

The author's comments:
The book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" really inspired me. It hurt me to know all the pain Maya Angelou went through at such a young age. It's sad to think this actually happens to a kid, and that they have to grow up so fast. Her story inspired my writing of this poem. All the emotion I felt for Maya just spilled out in this assignment. I hope she is, indeed, free from the chains now.
