Optical illusions
I fell in love
With the way you
Wear your hat on the back
Of your head
And lazy Saturdays
Wrapped up in you
With the faint noise
Of the television droning
In the background
I fell in love
With the way you always
Kissed me hungrily
Always wanting
One more piece of me
Than I was quite ready to give
I fell in love
With your love
And the way it filled
The pit in my stomach
That opened up and demanded my attention
The second your arms left me.
But that’s the thing about love
Most of it is just
An optical illusion
A trick of the light
Being in the right place
At the right time
To witness something beautiful
That can’t last.
We love too fast
And too hard
And our clumsy
Human hands
Choke all the magic
From it’s feeble,
Tiny neck.
And maybe that’s just what we did.
Maybe
We were never
Truly
In love
And maybe
It was just
A trick of the light
Being in the right place
At the right time
To witness something beautiful
That couldn’t last.
Maybe I fell in love
With the smell of your skin
As you held me hard in the rain
Or the way your whispers
Scared my demons
Back under my bed
And how warm our hands always felt
Palm to palm
The essence of you
But I never fell in love
With you
Maybe we were perpendicular lines
Cracks in the concrete
Meeting once
And then parting ways forever
And
Maybe we fell in love
With being in love
But we never fell in love
With each other.
