If you can't convince them, confuse them.

Today will cost us a friend
And someone else will gain one
An angry voice
A nasty word
And they disappear
Taking your darkest secrets and passing them around
To those you thought were your friends
Like candy
And this, my darling teenager, even though you’re rolling your eyes and pretending to ignore me,
Is how the strange world works.
A knife in the back
Will be healed by a new person
With a comforting hand and a gentle touch.
And you, too, will put the knife in someone’s back.
I have done it. So has your father. It’s just the way the world works.
I guess.

Hmm...yes, sometimes I think so too.

Favorite line - passing your secrets out like candy!  Unusual choice - to create a parent as the poem's speaker.
