black night
the stars could not
pierce the dust.

dust, lights
settled like pollen.

little lines of night wind
muffled fog
muffle roosters
left the land quiet.

as red as ripe new blood
the sun.

ruined green secretly remained
bare, exploring senses nuzzled faces
angry.
resistant.

The author's comments:
In English class recently, my teacher handed us a photocopy of a page from chapter two of "the Grapes of Wrath". She instructed us to highlight words, which we'd then turn into poetry. This is my poem from that lesson.
