lemon tree

slivers of the moon slowly arise
above the earth-green leaves of the lemon tree
silver/green/lemon-yellow
father sings to me
of cows asleep in their manger
while in their nests the sparrows sleep
meeta papanya dolanchai
let your eyelashes shut
brown/black/henna-in-the-sunlight-red
he is no longer with me
nor are the chirping sparrows in their nests
but i found one yesterday after winter had its way with it
perhaps that’s where father went
to the place with the sparrows
hiding behind the lemon tree
