The Lesson of the Puppy
I was talking to a puppy, as I zoomed around his home.
He seemed very excited as his tail wagged,
Running around, playing with his human.
The moon was in his eyes, he had the whole world!
Anything he wanted he got!
Or so he pretended.
He was confined in a jail.
“Why do you waste so much time on those rude humans?”
I seemed to have wondered aloud.
“They always smell awful!
They hit your nose when you eat the trash,
They put you outside as soon as you let go of your insides!
Plus they yell in some ghastly language and expect you to understand,
And if you don’t, they yell more!
It’s just not worth it.”
I explained.
“You’re a confused little guy,”
He told me,
“Even though they smell, they treat me well.
They get mad at me when I eat the trash,
But I hear you’re not supposed to do that anyway.
When it comes to my insides,
I don’t understand either,
But that’s okay
I love them anyway.
I’ve picked up on their language
With words like ‘sit, stand, lie down, and fetch.’
In the end, they are always my friend.
They play with me,
They feed me,
They share a bed with me.
I practically own them!
I will love them forever!”
And all of the sudden
Before I could correct him
He turned into a leaky sprinkler
And the humans started yelling and screaming!
Throwing tantrums with
“No dog! Bad dog! Get outside! No treats for you!”
I didn’t know what any of it meant,
But clearly by the way
They were kicking and screaming it wasn’t good.
Then in less than an instant
My friend the puppy
Had the back door slammed right in his nose.
How silly!
Being trapped in a zoo like this!
I thought.
Me?
No way would I ever be controlled
By a senseless animal like that!
No I like being free with
No one yelling gibberish at me,
Eating whatever trash I want,
Going potty wherever I choose.
That’s the life.
Still I would love to have someone to love
Someone to be my friend forever
Someone to fill the empty piece
That is the small insect of me.
