Inevitability
I am listening to an alternative song
About the power and infinite strength
Of love
While staring at a photograph of
A deep blue pool with crystal clear water
Reflecting
An explosive pink and orange sunset.
There is a young couple floating through
The ripples,
Her hair dancing with the rhythm of
The wind that also stirs the delicate leaves
Of palm trees
In the background with a heated passion.
His arm on her bare shoulder, a silhouetted
Smile
Brushing her cheeks with a July promise
Of solace and companionship. The evening
Is eternal,
Yet August lingers below the horizon
And the sun is always sinking lower and
Lower,
Piercing the flimsy, breathless clouds
With an unforgiving snap that scatters fragile
Particles,
Not unlike the breathless sob from my
Stomach that shreds through my heart as a
Tiny teardrop
Patters against the glossy image.
She is two hundred miles away, and it is
Now September.
