Death

I walk among you every single day

You scream as I take your loved ones away

I do my job whoever it may be:

the little girl with cancer or the murderer in the seat

She didn’t deserve it as much as he

But that didn’t matter when I stopped her heartbeat

I am blind to gender, age, and color

I don’t care if I leave people on their knees

I take who I come for, I do whatever I please

You must understand, I don’t say it to be cruel

But with a job like mine I do what I must do

Even I must follow the rules

I take sons and daughters from grade school

I riddle the helpless with disease

Don’t get me wrong I don’t enjoy what I do

And don’t hate me because you refuse to let go like a fool

I take it you won’t like it when I come for you

You can try to hide but nothing escapes my view

I’ll come in silence, for I do not breathe

I know nothing but those whose time is due

I come to both the unexpected and those who knew

To many I’m a mystery and an inevitable threat

But to others I’m a kind friend, a relief from the pain.

What I do is quite humane

So don’t fret my dear when I come for you

Because I will take you even if you don’t want me to
