The Dream
Close your eyes
Sitting on a big woven rug
Turn the pages of a hardcover
Rhyme and reason govern
a stately province
where hands hold soil and soap
No one tattles
and at exactly 12 p.m.
everyone has apple juice
and Goldfish crackers
We all understand lima beans
and how they grow, slowly, greenly
and we know how
to clean up our mess
Someday, I will be an astronaut
Because they fly…
Fast forward, open your eyes
40 years and
I have yet to fly.
