White is
Nothing
Blank
Holding absolutely no rank
In the colors of a rainbow

Rejected
Denied
The standing out side
Of a half moon
Or the wing of a loon
Or the oh so thin sliver
Of moonlight on a pond
The swans drifting carefully along

But white is also the opportunity
Of everything
That is
Was
Or could be
It’s all the beauty a scrap of paper could hold
The story of everything still untold
White is the absence of Everything
But with that
It is also everything

The author's comments:
Several recent events (my grandfather gradually losing his vision, a new friend of mine living with synesthesia) have spurred me to think about the science and artistic concept of color. How would you describe an given color to a blind person? To expand on that, how would you describe anything that is identified with one of our 5 senses to someone deprived of that sense? "White" is the first poem in a collection that explores these question, and what white means to me.
