“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

The wind blew my umbrella away.
I watched it fade slowly into blackness
Like a broken body hanging from
Splintered strings, a puppeteer’s pageant.

Storms tumble down from heaven.
I create friction with the cold pavement
As I flee from falling bullets
Ripping at my flesh, feeling a faint pulse.

Tucked away in soft sheets, I sleep.
Perfect circles sway beneath my eyelids
In a whirlwind of eager escape
To fantasy, far gone from permeated devils.

Haunters, they have escaped already.
Between breaths their demon toes dance
Through damp lily fields at dusk:
Sniffing petals, dripping blood upon bloom.

They parade atop chariots set ablaze.
Shattering cathedral windows to swarm
In and congregate among hollow
Sanctuary pews, veined marbles echo howls.

Pillars of salt are erected in my mind.
The gargoyles shriek eternal hymns from
Their roost upon these crumbling
Structures, knifing holes in my sunken chest.

The lake of fire is the second death.
My eyes spring open to scour the unsaid
Words still haunting my soul in
Graceless absence; there will be no salvation.

The pages blank and my heart thus ended
This broken body drops, down, descended.
