You've Changed
You're sneaking around
In that mask of yours
Your heels scratch the ground
And you fall to the floor
You are a wreck
As you shut the back door
A light is flipped on
You heave a sigh
As night turns to dawn
And wobble your way to the bathroom
No one is awake
You rest your head on the cold tiles
Your head is spinning
For what seems like miles
You can no longer put up with this
These cigarettes and fake smiles
And remember how things used to be
When you didn't have a C in every class
Or spend every day with another guy
You cannot bear to utter yet another lie
You remember when you wore neon pink tank tops
Not tight jeans
Or ripped seams
When you preferred band class
To skipping class
The days when you sat with your best friend
And watched movie marathons
And talked about school and parents
Not smoking with your boyfriend
What happened to that butterfly necklace?
Or that book you used to love so much?
Your life is a tangled mess
Twisted and knotted
With false statements and hidden secrets
And so many regrets
I only hope you will feel this way
When you get tired of your reckless life
I only hope you miss our talks
And our slumber parties
There are dozens of letters from you
Stacked neatly in my closet behind my high school yearbooks
They are written in blues and purples
In a cute teenage girl font
Some days I take them out and retread them
And I smile and laugh
And wish things had been different
So this is all I ask for,
All I really want,
Stop cheating on your boyfriend
Stop being someone you are not
Pick up the phone and call me
