Frozen House
The old house sat in the middle of an old town
It was covered in dust and peeling paint
Its windows were all covered with drapes
The old town was not even as old as the house
The town was asleep, as was the house,
All except for one girl who was wide awake
The aged wood creaked beneath the slim girl’s feet
as she tried desperately to sneak through the Victorian house
without waking its slumbering occupants
who could awaken and scold her at any moment
Fear kept her moving, but it also paralyzed her
Keeping her uncertain and motivated to go on
Her fiery, long hair whispered out behind her
Like the soft breezes of summer
But her eyes were a cold blue
That were set with determination to finish what she had started
as she quickly, but silently, flew down a stairwell
She was sliding down the polished cherry wood banister
The wood groaned out at her slight weight
It stretched and spun down and pulled the girl down
the long, lonely three stories of the house.
At the end of the line, she neither flew nor fell
but glided onto the forgotten chair
placed directly in front of the stairs
That was mainly used for dust coats to lay on now.
The dark paneled walls spun for a few moments
as she tried to regain her sense of balance
she started to fall back, but stayed on her feet.
Her body was trembling with exhilaration and adrenalin
As she ran out the door
“Holy crap.” the girl muttered
As the wind whipped at her face
Tearing at her and hoping for her to head back inside
She didn’t belong outside, not at this time of night
When all the nocturnal animals were out and ready to hunt
And a small girl couldn’t put up much of a fight.
She gazed up at the sky and held out her arms
Maybe for one of the last times as she spun around
And watched with amazement as snow flakes fell
.They fluttered around her warm head
Careful to not get too close so they didn’t melt
The red headed girl spun as she sang softly to herself
The same song she had sung for many years
Through her sisters door in hopes to have a playmate
Do you want to build a snowman?
When her feet were too cold to stay outside much longer
She rushed back inside and closed her home’s doors quietly
She raced back to her room
Only taking a small peek at the forever sealed door
That she could never get to open
