I wonder
in the eyes of others
I wonder
Who am I
to them?

Do they see why I laugh?
Or understand why I cry?

I wonder
in these eyes of mine
I wonder
Who are they
to me?
What do I see?

Do I see why they laugh?
Or understand why they cry?

If the eyes are the window to the soul
then are opinions the curtains?
Or prejudice the blinds?
Is judgement the locks?
And pride the screen?

I wonder
if we see
I wonder
if we understand

The author's comments:
I recently finished "The Harlem Renaissance" in Literature class. I wanted to write about how people could see other people, and sometimes how wrong they could be, with prejudice, and racism clouding their eyes. I also wanted to explore the thought of how others see me, and how I see them.
