Your Beautiful, Lovely Self
How you yank open your hair tie the moment you get home,
The way you curl your hair, the way you straighten it.
It may be for your boyfriend, but I think not.
The way you say you need no help
Your beautiful, lovely self.
Why you seem to cry, only when no one’s there
the despise in your eyes, but still you choose to stay
just because there’s an apology, you think that it’s okay.
Still you shine so brightly with hope,
in all the challenges that you choose to face alone
Your beautiful, lovely self.
The smile you show to your friends
and to those you don’t know like me,
as well as the passion there is with every single thing you do.
It disappears when you’re with him,
it is eclipsed by his abandonment obsession.
Your smile gets you through,
Your beautiful, lovely self.
The paintings you paint, for no one but yourself
the boyfriend you seem to hate, but you still stick around.
The time when you try to fall asleep, but struggle to stay awake
And how you make sure your screams reach no ears,
Your beautiful, lovely self.
The way you run with your legs, and throw with your arms.
How you play sports so magnificently with your body.
It gets bruised from the games you play,
both sports and when with your man.
Why do you stay?
You won’t be able to hide it for long,
Your beautiful, lovely self.
There’s a point of no return, and you’re treading troubled water.
Your hair, eyes, smile, habits and body-
that are still trampled upon by your one and only,
make up your beautiful, lovely self.
