the field
I watch as the orange sky slowly dulls.
The fiery sky gives way to the empty.
I come to a halt before a field.
It is cluttered with stones of sorrow.
It is lonely, nearly forgotten.
The leaves crunch underneath my feet.
The wind whips across my face.
Fall darkens into Winter.
Winter blossoms into Spring.
Spring lengthens into Summer.
Summer fades into Fall.
Everything has a beginning.
Everything has an end.
I stroll through,
Smartly stepping over
The “I’m sorry’s”
The “I love you’s”
The “I miss you’s”
That have been left behind.
There was a beginning.
This is the end.
This is where everything stops.
This is where the wind doesn’t dare to blow.
Where the birds don’t dare to sing.
Where the flowers don’t dare bloom.
The unfulfilled dreams fill the space.
I hear the broken promises whisper.
They never got to say “goodbye”.
